Magnetic flow meters (mag meters) are widely used in industrial applications for their accuracy, reliability, and non-intrusive measurement of conductive liquids. However, like all precision instruments, they require regular maintenance to ensure long-term performance. Proper maintenance can prevent measurement errors, equipment downtime, and costly repairs.
What is a Magnetic Flow Meter?
Magnetic flowmeters, fully known as electromagnetic flowmeters, are flow measurement devices based on Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. When a conductive liquid flows through a pipe with an applied magnetic field, a voltage is induced within the liquid. This voltage is directly proportional to the flow velocity. By detecting this voltage, the volumetric flow rate of the fluid can be calculated.
Faraday’s law is expressed as
E = k × B × D × V
It is often used to measure the volume flow of conductive liquids such as water, sewage, slurry, acid and alkali solutions, etc. It is widely applied in industries such as water treatment, chemical engineering, food, pharmaceuticals, and power.
Main Components
| Component | Function |
| Measuring pipeline | For liquid to flow through, it is generally lined with an insulating layer (such as PTFE) |
| Electrode | Located on both sides of the pipe wall, it detects the induced voltage |
| Excitation coil | Generate a magnetic field perpendicular to the flow direction |
| Converter/Display unit | Convert the induced voltage signal into a flow value and display and output it |
Table of Main Components
Advantages
- Flow-blocking component → Does not affect fluid flow and has no pressure loss
- Suitable for corrosive liquids → Lining and electrode materials are optional
- High precision → Generally ±0.5% to ±1%
- Adapt to various media → such as slurry, sewage, ore pulp, etc
- Bidirectional measurement → Can measure flow in both forward and reverse directions
How to clean magnetic flowmeters?
· Power off, close the valve, and empty
Before cleaning, the power supply and the inlet and outlet water valves must be turned off first, and the liquid in the pipeline must be drained completely to ensure safety.
· Wipe the exterior
Wipe the flowmeter housing, display screen and cable interface with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt.
· Clean the internal electrodes
Pipe-type Magnetic Flowmeter
- Remove the flowmeter or open the inspection port;
- Use a soft-bristled brush to gently remove impurities from the electrode surface.
- If the scale is severe, it can be wiped with neutral detergent and a cotton swab.
- Avoid excessive force that may damage the electrode or the inner lining (such as PTFE, PFA, etc.).
Insertable Electromagnetic Flowmeter
- After disassembling the flowmeter, gently wipe off the dirt or scale on the electrodes with a soft brush or cotton swab.
- Use clean water or alcohol. Do not use strong acids, alkalis or hard objects.
- Be careful not to damage the inner lining (such as rubber or PTFE materials).
How to maintain magnetism (by model)?
Integrated Electromagnetic Flow Meter
Product features: Integrated instrument sensing and conversion functions, easy installation, suitable for medium pipe diameter applications.
Maintenance focus
- Moisture-proof and anti-condensation: When installed in an environment with high humidity or large temperature differences, the issue of internal condensation should be taken into account. It is recommended to choose an IP67-level sealing structure or add a desiccant/heating device to control humidity.
- Grounding and electrical inspection: Regularly check if the grounding resistance is lower than 4 Ω to prevent poor grounding from introducing interference
- Electrode and inner lining cleaning: If the reading drifts, fluctuates or jumps significantly, the electrode surface should be cleaned to remove dirt or scale.
- Visual inspection: Regularly check the display screen and the casing for cracks, seal failure or water accumulation issues
- Firmware and Diagnostic Maintenance: Utilize Apure’s built-in diagnostic log function to detect anomalies early and export for analysis on a regular basis.

Split-Type Electromagnetic Flow Meter
Product features: The sensor and converter are installed separately, adapting to complex wiring and on-site environments.
Maintenance focus
- Cables and wiring: Check whether the connection cables between the sensor and the converter are intact, waterproof, free from wear and tear or looseness.
- Signal grounding: Ensure that the grounding wire is in good condition and use shielded cables to avoid strong electrical interference.
- External converter protection: Protect the converter housing well to prevent malfunctions caused by high-temperature and high-humidity environments.

Insertion Electromagnetic Flow Meter
Product features: Easy to install, it can be installed or maintained through a ball valve without interrupting the flow, suitable for large-diameter applications.
Maintenance focus
- Regularly clean the probe: The detachable probe makes it easy to clean the electrode surface and prevents deposits from affecting the reading.
- Sealing O-ring: Inspect or replace the sealing ring to ensure there is no leakage, especially under high-pressure conditions.
- Probe depth verification: After installation, ensure the correct insertion depth to avoid affecting measurement accuracy.

Typical cases of magnetic fault handling
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Reading drift or sudden jump | Electrode contamination, poor grounding | Clean electrodes, check grounding |
| No display | Power failure, loose wiring | Check power supply and connections |
| Flow shows zero but liquid is present | Electrode covered, empty pipe, air bubbles | Inspect medium, reinstall or vent |
| Inaccurate flow | Deposits, air bubbles, electrode aging | Clean, replace electrode, recalibrate |

Summary
Magnetic flow meters are precise and reliable instruments, but consistent maintenance is key to preserving their performance. Proper cleaning, electrode and liner inspection, signal verification, and regular calibration can significantly reduce downtime and ensure accurate measurements.
